Wild Country 03:48
There’s a time when a boy can be content with his dreams Sitting by the creekside. There’s a time when a boy becomes a man Starts wondering the reasons why. There’s a time when I knew I would follow the sunset Move west across a prairie sky. But then the city called and I answered her prayer Started wondering the reasons why. I keep telling myself I keep telling myself I keep telling myself Now I’m a man looking back on a boy Dreaming of a prairie sky. I’m tired of the questions without answers Tired of wondering the reasons why. I keep telling myself I keep telling myself I keep telling myself There’s a Wild Country.

I was waiting for the lightning, you brought the rain. Mama said, “Son, better get out of there while you still can.” I’m going home, Buffalo Crossroads. Summertime dust settles on the corn, let’s kick off our shoes. Barefoot baby girl, running around, we ain’t got nothing to lose. I’m going home, Buffalo Crosssroads. Turned 18 and I went to school, then I took this job. Moved so far from my hometown, sometimes I get lost. Going home, Buffalo Crossroads. Home. Well the first girl I loved is still living there with her man and her kids you know it’s been ten years. But the songs we sang, they still play, when she listens to the radio, she thinks of me. Coming home. Buffalo Crossroads.

He’s a killer, me I walk that line. Just a stranger, down here serving time. I made a promise, gonna keep it any way I can. Cause that’s my word, that’s the law of this land. Two riders, in the blood and the dust. I found him, someone I could trust. When I turned around, that’s when he took his chance. Pointed his gun, said boy, that ‘s the law of the land. I’m wounded, please leave me with my life. You cross me, he said, you’ll live to cross me twice. And I made a promise, not to tell no other man. Kept my word, that’s the law of this land.

Careless 04:23
I was careless, I was heartless, I was wreckless, I was thoughtless. Couldn’t find me no shelter, no place to lay my head. Couldn’t find me no refuge, from those things that I said. ‘Cause I was too careless, Cause I was too careless, Cause I was too careless, with you. No no no you weren’t perfect, sure you had your faults. But I was so callous, with the hardest of hearts. I didn’t give you no chances, ‘cause that’s not what I do. Couldn’t take no more heartbreak, from another pretty face like you. ‘Cause I was too careless, Cause I was too careless, Cause I was too careless, with you. ‘Cause if you come back my heart won’t be so black and I promise, I promise it’s true. ‘That I won’t be so careless, I won’t be so careless, I won’t be so careless, with you.

Rise now, Old Prophets. We leave our ears to the ground. We are, New Giants. We listen to the sounds. The sky is falling, The West is calling, The Nightjar is singing her song. My home is a stable, I built with my own hands. But my love, She is wild, and her heart is the lands. The sky is falling, The West is calling, The Nightjar is singing her song.

You said you told me, every little thing I want to know. I’ve got a feeling though babe, that maybe there’s a little bit more. I’ve got a friend who, you know she goes where you go. She says she’s got some news to tell me about you, so baby it’s time for the truth. Are you in trouble, I’ve heard it around. You’re in trouble. On the Wrong side of Town. My friends tell me, that baby you ain’t no good. And maybe baby, I love a little bit more than I should. Oh, but no one, made me feel like you could. So if love will make a fool of me and you, well I’ll do what a man’s got to do. ‘Cause you’re in trouble, with your running around. You’re in trouble. On the Wrong side of Town. So I went down, to see Big Tommy. He says that you owe him, just a little bit of money babe. But I ain’t got enough for you honey, The steel come flashing, I’m too hot for him, I’m running before he hits the floor. ‘Cause I’m in trouble, when Tommy hit the ground. I’m in trouble. On the Wrong Side of Town.

Victoria 03:26
My heart’s gone flying, feet are on their way. This life is only worth, what’s done with each day. Seven days alone, a few men out on the sea. And the lights of Santiago, they sing their song to me. And so, I go, with a destiny that was chosen by my faith To ride on the ever-changing winds of an age. Always…

I was wandering in the dark, trying to clear my head and heal my heart. The hour was getting late, so turned around, I can’t see straight. Face against the cold night air, when I saw you standing there. Imagine my surprise, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It’s been eight long years, and since then, I have cried… A river of tears. Down by the river where the catfish swim, the moonlight was on your skin. You took my breath away, while the wind whispered your name. The mist across the lake, the memory of your fate. I cry out your name, you smile and gently say.. It’s been eight long years, it’s time for you to cross… Your river of tears. It’s been years since you were slain. I was never, never the same. I’ve been gut-wrenched from the pain. Now you’re back with me again. River of tears. River of tears. God only knows how she was right, my lover there in the moonlit night. It’s been eight long years, it’s time for me to cross my river of tears.

Dark Cloud 04:40
And I see, a dark cloud coming. A distant rumble, song dogs howling. No moonlight, no stars shining. Just a bitter wind, a cold power. Fields whither, cracked and broken. Death’s among us, words unspoken. And I shiver, I start falling. The end it near, death, I see her coming. I get up, and I start running. Corn stalks snap with every single step. A force pulls me down towards the river. These demon dogs from hell surely cannot swim. The last thing that I see, Is a dark cloud after me. Splash, I hit the water. Sinking slowly, last thing that I see. Is a glint in the eye of a song dog. Looking down at me mysteriously. The last thing that I see, Is a dark cloud after me. The last thing that I see, Is a dark cloud after me.

Song Dogs 07:06
Desert Dog, Coyote Woman share with me the song you’re singing. At night I go out and I listen, let me run to you. Coyote dancing beneath the stars and moon, teach me to move as you do. The morning is coming soon, let me come to you. Desert Dog, Trickster Lady, you laughing, loving, crying baby. When the darkest nights make you lonely, let me stay with you. We are Song Dogs, we are lovers; We are longing for another. Last night I swear I felt her Deep inside me, seeking shelter. Oh Coyote, keep on dreaming. Keep on scheming; keep believing. Oh and trust me; trust my song And you won’t have to keep on running.

about

The prairie-heavy rock of Song Dogs' first LP is a driving but nostalgic search for the lost wild country: a landscape both beautiful and dangerous.
